| | The first comedy festival on the Edinburgh Fringe? You’re joking – right?
After all, this stuff has been with us for so long and so successfully that comedians all over the world now know that to make it here is, well, to make it. You can’t begin to count the acts who came to Edinburgh wet behind the jeers and ended up as household names: French and Saunders, The League of Gentlemen, Stewart Lee, Graham Norton, The Mighty Boosh, Jo Brand, Russell Brand (no relation – allegedly), Paul Merton, Eddie Izzard, Jerry Sadowitz, Rhona Cameron, Count Arthur Strong and Rich Hall among them. And many –
most? – still just can’t keep away.
But that’s the point. To make room for the favourites and to make yet more room for the rising stars, Edinburgh needed this: the radical creation of a new festival-within-a-festival, separated but integrated, with space and resources to nurture and display the finest comedic talents under the joint banners of the most prestigious venues in town.
So welcome, please, to the 2008 inaugural Edinburgh Comedy Festival, in which Assembly, Gilded Balloon, Pleasance and Underbelly are collaborating to showcase every style of contemporary comedy - be it stand-up, sketch, improv, poetry, musical or comic theatre.
One clear selection, on one concise website, to help you make your choices. And to make it easier still to plan ahead: all tickets, to all shows, can be bought at all our box offices.
Have a great festival.

| | Imagine a portal that contains the entire Assembly, Gilded Balloon, Pleasance and Underbelly programme all in one place. Chuck in some pictures. Maybe a map or two - hell, why not go the whole hog and spread on some video clips. Well that's what this website is about. Making it easier for you to find out what's on in Edinburgh this festival.
To start It depends. Have you come to the site looking for one show in particular (hint: our handy search up there will scour the site to find any instance of the word you search for), or have you come to find inspiration for your stay (you can search shows by genre, venue and time of day by using our find box over there on the left).
Booking tickets As you skate around the site, look out for our handy 'add to my shows' links. Click the link, and it will just save the show to the handy list over there on the right. Then you won't lose a show - it's always there waiting for you, like a puppy waiting outside the shop. When you're ready to book tickets, click on the date you'd like to book for, and you'll be be taken on a whirlwind journey of ticket buying frenzy!
Ts & Cs Like any good site, we've got a few terms of sale that we'd like to draw your attention to. There is a booking fee of 80p per ticket (maximum £4 per transaction), and all tickets are sold on a non-refundable basis. You're responsible for getting to the theatre on time, and on the date on your ticket. And don't eat yellow snow. |
